Bronx, NY– This Monday, December 10, 2012, Latino Sports Ventures, Inc. will present its second Roberto Clemente forum with Ms. Francis Rodríguez, Executive Director of the Roberto Clemente State Park. The park is a 25-acre waterfront facility located along the Harlem River in the Bronx. It was established in 1973 and it is one of the few New York State run parks in the inner city.
The forum is part of the 12th annual “21 Days of Clemente” symposiums honoring Roberto Clemente, the great baseball player and humanitarian who died tragically 40 years ago in a plane crash delivering emergency relief to Nicaragua in 1972.
Applebee’s, the largest casual dining chain in the world, is hosting the forums with locations throughout the U.S. In 2009, the restaurant opened a new location in the South Bronx, close to Yankee Stadium right off the Major Deegan Expressway.
On December 17, former MLB pitcher, Fred Cambria, who was a teammate of Clemente on the 1970 Pittsburgh Pirates team, will be the closing speaker. Clemente also managed Cambria in the Puerto Rican League.
“Many people remember Clemente as a great baseball player and the first Latino in the Hall of Fame. However, Clemente represents a lot more to the Latino community and we want to make sure that our youth understand that Clemente means more than just baseball,” stated Julio Pabón, CEO of Latino Sports Ventures, Inc.
In addition, Applebee’s will host an exhibit of many works written compositions and art done by local students as well as many Roberto Clemente items in their window display beginning on December 10th till December 31st the day Clemente had the fatal accident that took his life.
These community symposiums have become an annual pilgrimage for many Clemente collectors and enthusiasts who have traveled from as far as Rockland County, NJ, CT, PA and DE to attend.
