New York, NY – With WrestleMania XXIX taking place on Sunday, April 7, 2013 at the MetLife Stadium, I wanted to dedicate this weekend’s soccer edition to current WWE World Heavyweight Champion Alberto Del Rio.
Before anyone is agitated by the fact that I selected a WWE superstar for this week’s soccer edition, let’s be aware that many soccer fans are also wrestling fans. For many of us Latinos, we grew up with Lucha Libre as it’s part of our cultural identity. With that said, let’s continue…
Prior to signing with the WWE and becoming a two-time WWE Champion, the 2011 Royal Rumble winner, and 2011 Mr. Money in the Bank, the wrestler known as Alberto Del Rio is the son of Mexican Luchador Icon, Dos Caras.
Born as Jose Alberto Rodríguez, Del Rio was simply born to be a fighter. Even before wrestling professionally, he had an outstanding amateur wrestling career to the point he earned a place on the Mexican national team in Greco-Roman wrestling.
Along with his success amateur wrestling career, he was a Mixed Martial Artist. After making his professional wrestling debut in 2000 as Dos Caras, Jr. for Asistencia Asesoría y Administración (AAA), Del Rio competed in MMA where he finished with a 9-5 record.
Sadly, his most famous fight took place during PRIDE Bushido 1 against Mirko “Cro Cop” Filipović. Competing as Dos Caras, Jr and wearing a mask, Del Rio lost via head kick in the first round.
After wrestling in Mexico for several years, Del Rio was signed by the World Wrestling Entertainment. Repackaged as an arrogant Mexican aristocrat Alberto Del Rio, he was known for his entrances in expensive cars and personal ring announcer, Ricardo Rodriguez.
Despite the character he portrayed, wrestling fans realized he was a legitimate wrestler and even though they booed, they appreciated his technical ruthless MMA-style of wrestling as he would finish off his opponents with his signature cross armbar.
From his time in the WWE, Alberto Del Rio has gone from someone who was jeered to someone who is now being cheered. On Sunday, April 7, 2013, he will have the opportunities to defend the rights of immigrants in his championship match in Wrestlemania.
Now a face (good guy), Del Rio will face the Real American Jack Swagger who recently returned to the WWE with new manager Zeb Coulter (Dutch Mantel), who is playing the role of an individual with strong anti-immigrant beliefs. While most fans are aware that WWE is a scripted show, Coulter’s words are still controversial and offensive. Depending on your beliefs, you will find Coulter’s comments to be hurtful or accurate.
