ANOTHER MOLINA CATCHER CONTRIBUTES TO WIN OVER BRAVES

on

For anyone who was wondering – no this Molina has no relation to the Molina family who has some of the finest catchers currently playing in Major League Baseball from Puerto Rico. Queens, NY April 26, 2008—For anyone who was wondering – no this Molina has no relation to the Molina family who has some of the finest catchers currently playing in Major League Baseball from Puerto Rico. But if you want to compare him to any of them the compliment is fine by him. One other fact, this Molina is from La Guaira, Venezuela and thus the third Venezuelan on the team along with Johan Santana and Endy Chavez. Gustavo Molina gave both the Mets and Raul Casanova much needed relief at the catching position today in helping propel the Mets to a 4-3 win over the Braves at Shea today.

Gustavo Molina came a long way to make his first start as a Met today. Having gone from playing in front of small minor league crowds to 51,339 crazed New York fans is a big jump. But it's a jump that Molina is ready for, "You never know when you are going to get called up. Every day I've been going to the minor league field; I go there and get the opportunity to play every day and make myself a better player. I continue to work hard so that I am ready to play."

Molina who was called up from the New Orleans Zephyrs on April 24th; will now be a part of the catching platoon (along with Casanova) until the infection in Brian Schneider thumb heals up. "I got the call two nights ago and arrived in Washington and got the start today," he told me, "It was exciting my first ever time in New York it was awesome experience today." Even though today was his first start as a Mets in the big leagues Molina and starting pitcher John Maine worked together twice in Spring Training. Today though was something completely different and Molina wanted to be prepared, "Maine and I talked yesterday and today before the game so that we had a plan going in as to what we were doing.' The pitch that Molina called most during today's game was a change-up. “His change-up really impressed me today, that was his best pitch today." Molina who has been making an impact for the Mets in their Triple A affiliate which included.288 batting average, three doubles and one home run; continued to make an impact by getting his first hit as a Met. It happened in the second inning, as Molina ripped a single into right field finishing up with a 1-3 day at the plate. And catcher Molina showed off a strong arm, as he was an inch away from catching Gregor Blanco stealing during the top of the seventh inning. Tomorrow may bring another day for Molina in a Mets uniform, or he may get called to go back to the minor leagues. No matter what, today showed that Gustavo Molina is ready for whatever challenges that may come his way, "You don't know what is going to happen next so you have to be ready. That is the key you have to be ready."
