Havana, Cuba - Cuban Yipsi Moreno, double world champion in the hammer throwing event is planning to travel to Spain to continue her preparation for the Olympics games in Athens from August 13 to 29.
"The training is going well, we find ourselves in a maximum stage with a lot of work to do and afterwards we will enter a special competitive phase closer to the games”, stated Yipsi last Tuesday after the conclusion of her last workout in the Pan-American stadium in this capital.
The best Cuban athlete of 2003 will accompany her trainer, Eladio Hernandez and two other female members of the teams, Yunaika Crawford and Aldenay Vasallo who are also aspiring to get to Athens.
The three may participate in three or four competitions during this period and the first is scheduled for June 5th in the Grand Prix in Sevilla.
In the six competitions this year, the 23 year old athlete has already established the Central American & Caribbean record with 75.18 meters in the National Olympics last April 25th. On May 8th she had her international debut with a triumph in the Grand Prix in Osaka, Japan, with a throw of 72.92 meters. Today she heads the 2004 world list with more than three meters ahead of the rest. "I find myself very close to the world record (76.07 metros) and could occur at any moment, but the most important is to win a medal in Athens”, added the Pan-American Champion.
Four years ago, the younger competitor finished fourth in Sydney. The Russian, Olga Kuzenkova, French women, Manuela Montebrun, the Rumanian Mihaela Melinte, the record holder from Poland, Kamila Skolimowska, and the Chinese, Yuan Gu and Wenxiu Zhang are all classified among her greatest rivals.
"I would like to compete with them before going to Athens, It would be very positive to get to Athens with a better understanding of the other females in this competition. It would make me more comfortable at the time of completion.”
Yipsi stated that she was pleased with this new European tour with her teammates. "All three of us will help each other a lot and Yunaika as well as Aldenay have what it takes to fulfill our trainers dream to classify three women among the top 12 in Athens", she concluded.
Another three Cubans, Indira Salinas, Arasay Thondike and Daimara Rovira, are preparing for the World Youth meet in Grosseto, Italy, from July 13 through 18.
YIPSI MORENO CONTINUARÁ PREPARACIÓN OLÍMPICA EN EUROPA
La Habana.- La cubana Yipsi Moreno, doble campeona mundial de lanzamiento del martillo, tiene previsto viajar hoy a España para continuar su preparación con vistas a los Juegos Olímpicos de Atenas, del 13 al 29 de agosto.
"El entrenamiento marcha bien, nos encontramos ahora en una etapa de fuerza máxima, con mucho volumen de trabajo, y después entraremos en las fases especial y competitiva, ya más cerca de los Juegos", dijo Yipsi este martes tras concluir su última sesión de trabajo en el Estadio Panamericano, en el este capitalino.
La mejor deportista cubana de 2003 estará acompañada por su entrenador, Eladio Hernández, y dos compañeras de equipo, Yunaika Crawford y Aldenay Vasallo, quienes también aspiran a llegar a la final olímpica en Atenas.
Las tres deben realizar de tres a cuatro competencias en este período, y la primera esta señalada para el 5 de junio en el Grand Prix de Sevilla.
En sus seis competencias este año, la atleta de 23 años de edad ya batió su propio récord centroamericano y del Caribe, con envío de 75.18 metros en la Olimpiada Nacional, el pasado 25 de abril. El 8 de mayo debutó internacionalmente con triunfo en el Grand Prix de Osaka, Japón, al lanzar 72.92 metros. Hoy encabeza la lista mundial de 2004 con más de tres metros de ventaja sobre las demás.
"Me encuentro bien cerca del récord del mundo (76.07 metros) y pudiera salir en cualquier momento, pero lo más importante es conseguir una medalla en Atenas", añadió la titular panamericana.
Hace cuatro años, aún juvenil, la campeona cubana terminó cuarta en la cita estival de Sydney.
La rusa Olga Kuzenkova, la francesa Manuela Montebrun, la rumana Mihaela Melinte, recordista del orbe, la polaca Kamila Skolimowska, monarca olímpica, y las chinas Yuan Gu y Wenxiu Zhang califican entre sus principales rivales.
"Me gustaría topar con ellas, sería muy positivo para llegar a Atenas con mayor conocimiento de cómo esta el martillo femenino y te hacer sentir mas cómoda a la hora de competir", comentó en referencia a sus adversarias.
Yipsi se declaró muy complacida compartir esta nueva gira europea con dos compañeras de equipo. "Las tres nos ayudaremos mucho y tanto Yunaika como Aldenay tienen condiciones para llegar a la final olímpica y así cumplir el sueño de mi entrenador de clasificar a tres mujeres entre las 12 mejores en Atenas", concluyó.
Otras tres cubanas, Indira Salinas, Arasay Thondike y Daimara Rovira, se preparan con vistas al Mundial juvenil en Grosseto, Italia, del 13 del 18 de julio.
