HISTORY IN THE MAKING/HISTORIA EN EL ECHO
By Julio Pabón

Queens, NY: Score another one for the Latino sports community and the community in general, as history was made today when the NY Mets held their first ever press conference exclusively for the Latino press organized by Latino Sports and the Latino Sports Writers Broadcasters Association (LSWBA). The Mets now join the NY Yankees as the two major league teams that conduct these bi-lingual (Spanish – English) press conferences on a routine basis for the Latino press.

The first Met player to participate was first baseman, Carlos Delgado who was introduced as a recent New Yorker who has earned the respect of the Latino community for both his on the field as well as his off field performances that include his social and political convictions. Delgado smiled when he heard that and immediately felt comfortable with the over 25 LSWBA members that represented a good cross section of the tri-state’s Latino community.

Other articles on this site will specifically address some of the questions addressed to Carlos and his responses, but one question that was addressed that relates to the historical nature of today’s press conference was on retiring Roberto Clemente’s # 21. “As a Puerto Rican I am proud to support retiring Clemente’s number and I will be the first to take off my shirt for that purpose,” Delgado answered. The press conference was a huge success and the NY Mets should be congratulated for accepting our proposal to begin these important press conferences.

We then went off onto the field to continue to make history on the issue of retiring Clemente’s number 21. The following pictures could say more than what we can. Enjoy and please call our offices for petitions on retiring number 21 and, or any additional information you might want.
