WHY: Did you know?
Roberto Clemente is a positive role model for Latino and other youth, not only for his athletic ability on the baseball field but for his leadership as a humanitarian. He has the distinction of being the first Latino to be in inducted into the Baseball Hall of Fame and was a member of the 3,000 hit club, a two-time World Series player, a four-time National League Batting Champion, and MVP in the 1971 World Series. Clemente was killed in a plane crash while on a humanitarian trip to take medical, food and clothing supplies to earthquake-stricken Nicaragua on December 31, 1972. Your coverage of this event will generate awareness about Clemente’s contribution to society and the growing movement for Major League Baseball to retire Roberto Clemente's number.
There are more public and private institutions named after Roberto Clemente than any other baseball player; Clemente is the second baseball player to be commemorated on a US postage stamp (Jackie Robinson was the first). Source: www.retire21.org.
