First Mets commentator Ron Darling claims to have read David Wright's lips. Ron being high up in the booth can see all the way down into the dugout.
Darling professes Wright instructed Carlos Delgado not to tip his hat to the fans after he hit two home runs in the game. Delgado was previously in a slump and fans were letting him know of there dissatisfaction in him. It would have been hypercritical of them to cheer for him after they had shown Carlos their fangs.
Boos are a common thing anywhere you go, you just go out there and do the best you can. Wright denied making those statements. "I would never give an order to any player to do anything. I don't know where the media gets these ideas from. Who am I to tell anyone especially a veteran player like Delgado anything like that."
Wright denied whole heartedly and I believe him. Even if he did make that statement, its not the business of the media to create havoc or incite riot, or to destroy a baseball player's life. Making irresponsible and harmful comments on the air can easily end the carreer and change the lives of athletes for good.
For example during Wednesday's Yankees/Indians game, Alex Rodriguez and Andy Pettitte were having a conversation in the dugout. Michael Kay made a fuss over the matter. He wanted to know what Pettitte told A-Rod. The next day he questioned A-Rod about his private chit chat with Pettitte and he quickly rushed off Kay.
I'm sure the Wright/Delgado situation was in the back of his mind. Roger Clemens' life is constantly under the microscope. Reporters camp out on his lawn trying to get a glimpse of him or any family member. Are they really trying to get a story or vindicatively going after these players. The Daily News thought it was worthy to help out a wannabe country singer.
They tried to help revive a career she never had at the expense of another human being. Clemens' ordeal is just pure speculation. The last time I looked I was still living in the good ol' USA. This not France, guilty before innocent. Have we become a blood thirsty industry? Are we going to have pay per view executions on T.V.? Right now the media is choosing our presidential candidate.
All major networks are censoring our politicians. They will not cover or give air time to this individual. I know baseball players make too much money for what they do, but these players have families. The players make have thick skin, but their wives, and their children are affected but these traumatic occurances.
I'm disappointed in Ron Darling, a man that won the Sportscaster of the Year award, and that he choose to become a reporter for the Globe. Michael Kay, you can expect that of him. Is the media going to be satisfied when someone commits suicide? Will they feel grand after finding out they have power to do so? When baseaball players refuse to be interviewed, they've become instant targets. They are a prime candidate for a modern day lynching. As a reporter I respect the person that I'm interviewing and I vowed to never write anything negative about a person. Jim Gray took away the moment for Pete Rose, when he asked him about gambling instead of asking him about being named to the All-Century Team.
He made Rose a victim on the spot. There are many a victim created by careless reporting, you have to wonder what's on their minds. Hope is all we have to hold on to. Maybe tomorrow morning we can turn to a clean page and put dangerous and irresponsible reporting behind us.
