 Mets' CitiField opens its doors with exhibition vs Red Sox Mets Foundation to Donate Net Proceeds from Ticket Sales from Series to Police Athletic League and Other Area Charities.
FLUSHING, N.Y., December 17, 2008 – The New York Mets will preview their new home, Citi Field, in 2009 with a two-game charity exhibition series against the Boston Red Sox Friday, April 3 at 6:10 p.m. and Saturday, April 4 at 1:10 p.m. The Mets Foundation will donate the net proceeds from ticket sales from these games to the Police Athletic League and other area charities. Full Season Ticket Holders will have both Red Sox exhibition games included in their 2009 Mets Season Ticket packages at substantially discounted prices as compared with regular season games. Single game tickets for April 3-4 will be similarly discounted and go on sale in the weeks ahead. The Red Sox series at Citi Field follows the Mets’ 32-game Florida exhibition schedule, including their first home game Thursday, February 26 at 1:10 p.m. when the Mets host the Florida Marlins at Tradition Field in Port St. Lucie, Fla. Single game tickets for the Mets’ 21st season at their Spring Training headquarters in Port St. Lucie go on sale Saturday, January 17 at 10 a.m. at Mets.com or by calling (772) 871-2115. Ticket prices for games at Tradition Field start at six dollars and remain unchanged from last year. New York has six games against the Baltimore Orioles (including their Grapefruit League Opener February 25) and the Washington Nationals, five games each against the Marlins and St. Louis Cardinals, four games against the Atlanta Braves and three games each against the Detroit Tigers and Houston Astros. In addition, the Mets will play Italy’s World Baseball Classic squad on Thursday, March 5 and an exhibition against the University of Michigan on Sunday, March 8 in Port St. Lucie. The Mets have four night games on their 2009 Grapefruit League schedule: Thursday, March 12 at home vs. Florida; Friday, March 27 at home vs. Washington; Monday, March 30 at home vs. Baltimore and Tuesday, March 31 in Jupiter vs. Florida. The Mets will conclude their exhibition season with a game in New York for the first time since March 29, 2003 when they hosted the Baltimore Orioles at Shea Stadium. Boston and the Mets will also face each other in Interleague play, May 22-May 24 at Fenway Park. The last time the Red Sox played the Mets in New York was in 2001. The Mets begin their 2009 regular season April 6 in Cincinnati.
