In 2008, Cora, hit .270 (the second highest average of his career) in 75 games for the Boston Red Sox.   He started 41 games, 38 at shortstop, and three at second base.

“You win championships with a 25-man roster,” said Mets General Manager Omar Minaya.  “Alex Cora has been an integral part of teams that have been to the postseason in four of the last five years.”

Cora, 33, who was a member of Boston’s 2007 World Championship club, also went to the postseason with the Red Sox in 2005 and with the Dodgers in 2004.

“I’m excited to join the Mets,” said Cora. “We have a talented roster. I’m committed to do everything I can in any role to win.”

Cora will represent Puerto Rico in the World Baseball Classic this March.

Last year for Boston, he struck out only 13 times, the lowest total in the American League among players with at least 150 at-bats.

Cora, a native of Caguas, PR, was selected by the Dodgers in the third round of the 1996 First Year Player Draft.  His first season with Los Angeles was in 1998.

In the majors he has played with the Dodgers, Cleveland Indians and Red Sox. In 1,034 games, Cora has a .245 batting average with 117 doubles, 34 triples, 34 home runs and 242 RBI.

Alex is the younger brother of Joey Cora, the bench coach with the Chicago White Sox.
