NEW YORK – In only the tenth overall meeting between the two storied programs, the St. John’s Red Storm avenged last season’s loss to the UCLA Bruins in a 66-63 win in front of national TV audience from Madison Square Garden Saturday.

The Red Storm’s D’Angelo Harrison had a game-high 22 points and eight rebounds as one of four Johnnies’ starters to score in double digits.

“He gets the whole team hyped, fires them up,” said the Red Storm’s Sir Dominic Pointer on the big-time plays of Harrison. Pointer, who finished the afternoon with 13 points and seven rebounds was also the recipient of the play of the game, when he dunked home an alley-oop off of a Bruins turnover on the Johnnies side of the court.

Despite fielding only a six-man roster, with forward God’sgift Achiuwa subbing in as the lone reserve, the Red Storm never relented, constantly pushing the Bruins out of their half-court offense, and forcing the tempo from a standstill to a run-and-gun pace.

NEW YORK – Sophomore guard Sean Kilpatrick is no stranger to the bright lights of New York.

A standout star for White Plains High School in Westchester, Kilpatrick made his return home count by notching 14 points and eight rebounds, including three 3-pointers in a 76-54 win for the Cincinnati Bearcats over the St. John’s Red Storm.

A slow first half in which Kilpatrick went 1 of 4 from the field, did not put a dent on his game or his confidence, as along with guards Dion Dixon (10 points, four assists) and Cashmere Wright (12 points, 10 rebounds), the Bearcats heated up in the second half to build a 27-point lead with 5:39 remaining in regulation.

NEW YORK – The Mountaineers of West Virginia rode into Madison Square Garden on a three-game win streak Wednesday night, but a total team effort culminated in the form of four Johnnies scoring in double-digits, putting to rest any notion for a fourth straight win in a 78-62 loss to St. John’s.

Freshman forward Moe Harkless topped the Red Storm scoring sheet with a team-high 23 points on an 11-of-23 shooting night from the field, as the Johnnies offensive plan to penetrate the paint paid off with a 50-32 point differential. Harkless, the No.2 freshman rebounder in the Big East, also finished with a team-high 13 boards.

“He gets a double-double almost every night,” said freshman Johnnies guard D’Angelo Harrison, who added, “He deserves more credit.”

The Mountaineers, not known for having a disoriented offense themselves, struggled for cohesion when the ball was in their possession, shooting 35.4-percent for the game, and only 22.7 from downtown. Normally averaging 75.6 points per game, WVU struggled to put up 20 first half points.

NEW YORK – The longest running series in Georgetown men’s basketball continued Sunday afternoon at Madison Square Garden, where the No.11 Hoyas ended a two-game skid with a 69-49 win over the St. John’s Red Storm.

Freshman forward Moe Harkless of St. John’s led all scorers with 21 points on 9-of-16 shooting from the field in the 96th all-time meeting between the two schools, but it would not be enough to contain the Hoyas’ Hollis Thompson, the top three-point shooter in the Big East Conference.

NEW YORK – The Big East competition in both the men’s and women’s divisions are at a very high level. Six of the 16 teams in each are ranked in the Top 25 nationally. Only two women’s teams and three men’s have won/lost marks below .500.

On Sunday afternoon, the men’s and women’s teams of St. John’s lost both games in the doubleheader at Madison Square Garden.

After the game, Georgetown Coach John Thompson III described the level of Big East competition, “Each game in our league is big.”

NEW YORK – Going for their first win against a ranked opponent this season, the St. John’s Red Storm found themselves unable to connect with the basket in a 73-58 home loss to No.10 Louisville Tuesday night.

St. John’s took to an early 8-3 lead, but quickly thereafter got mired in a 1 of 27 icy stretch from the field, where it mustered just 18 first-half points on 14.3 percent shooting.

Fordham's Chris Gaston (l.) was the talk of the town against Georgia Tech.

Bronx, NY – In a game reminiscent of Fordham’s 84-81 victory over St. John’s on Dec. 11, 2010 before the fans in a sold-out Rose Hill Gym, the Rams topped the Yellow Jackets of Georgia Tech (7-6), 72-66, on Thursday night. The win brought forth the emotions of the Fordham rooters in a packed gymnasium. The size of the crowd is a testament to the importance of the game as it was scheduled during the winter break for the Fordham student body. Fordham fans far from the gym supported their favorite team in their homes as the contest was televised by CBS Sports.

NEW YORK – Two of New York City’s prestigious Catholic school’s went at it on the hardwood of Madison Square Garden Saturday afternoon, and it was the St. John’s Red Storm who cemented Queens’s status as the best of the five boroughs in their 56-50 win over Fordham in the 2011 Holiday Festival.

The second game of a doubleheader showcased two teams with identical records (4-5) both looking to get to .500 and back to their winning ways. By out-rebounding the Rams 51-37, and by keeping them under 30-percent shooting for the game, St. John’s was able to escape with the victory.
