Cuba Might Not Attend Caribbean Series Over U.S. Denial Of Visas

The United States Interests Section in Cuba refused an entry visa to Puerto Rico to ballplayer Alfredo Despaigne and six other players of the Cuban delegation to the Caribbean Series, according to sources at ESPN reported.

Another player, Osniel Wood and an additional four players and two members of the coaching staff were also denied a visa, however, those four players and coaches names are not known.

In addition, the son of Alfonso Urquiola, mentor to the Pinar del Río, Heriberto Suarez Pereda, National Commissioner of Baseball, is trying to resolve the issue with US officials. Cuban sports executives have stated Cuba’s position. That is that if the issue is not resolved Cuba will not participate in the Caribbean Series.
