The Cubans Are Coming? New Policy In Cuba For Athletes

Those of us who follow sports abroad know that the Island nation of Cuba has some great athletes. From Teofilo Stevenson in boxing, Juantorena in track, the Cuban women’s volleyball team of the 90’s that rocked in world competition, Cuba has produced great athletes thanks to their revolution that has opened so many doors to all youth. In baseball we have steadily seen an increase of Cuban born players that have defected and are now in the majors. In fact I believe that there are probably more Cuban born players in MLB than Puerto Rican (and we don’t have to defect?).

Well now the floodgates might open for additional players of all sports to come and play professionally. The Cuban government just announced a new policy for athletes to be able to sign professional contracts abroad. The details are still not clear, but the following article will give you a good understanding of what is being proposed and how that might apply here in the USA.
