Mayagüez, PR: Dallas Mavericks forward, JJ Barea was honored today in his hometown of Mayagüez, Puerto Rico in a humble ceremony of the Maison’D Estitique Academy who used the occasion to promote its open house to the community.

Barea who reached the NBA because of his raw talent handling the ball and not through the conventional draft has found a home in Dallas where he is about to sign his second 2-year contract.

Barea, or “JJB” as he is affectionately known, came to the event with his mother who explained that JJB is somewhat shy and asked her to accompany him. His mother was delighted, especially since this was a school that focuses on beauty, cosmetology, esthetics and massages. She was especially delighted to hear about the school and its offerings and took a “rain check” on a personal day spa treatment.

Barea was happy to receive the award from the Academy and a special recognition from the mayor of Mayagüez. He took many pictures with many of the students, signed autographs and looked more like a politician holding babies and looking somewhat surprised with all the attention. JJB handled all the attention in the Academy as well as he is known for handling the ball down court avoiding all obstacles.

Mayagüez has a long proud tradition in culture, progressive politics and sports. As such, they love to honor their own, especially a son that has made it to the NBA.
