FAVRE’S 6 TD’S ROUTS CARDS • Latino Sports

Latino Sports writer Andrew Rosario tracks down a New York Jets win, one that came, as he points out, “After three games and two losses, the hype that followed Favre to the Big Apple had started to fade.”

East Rutherford, NY – Brett Favre streak of starting consecutive games (257) continued despite his gimpy right ankle that was sprained last Monday night in San Diego. After three games and two losses, the hype that followed Favre to the Big Apple had started to fade. The defense wasn’t helping either getting shredded for 250 yards and three touchdown passes in the last game against the San Diego Chargers.

It didn’t look to get any easier against the Arizona Cardinals led by ex-Giants quarterback Kurt Warner. Coming into the game, Warner had thrown 6 touchdown passes and only 1 interception. His high flying wide receiver crew of Anqwan Boldin and Larry Fitzgerald combined for 33 catches.

Both teams were coming off losses. Arizona decided to stay on the east coast after they lost to Washington hoping they could take advantage of not having to travel the extra 3,000 miles. Right from the start it looked like the strategy was a good idea as the Jets would go 3 and out after winning the toss. From their own 21, Warner connects with Fitzgerald for 16 yards and before you know it, Arizona has the ball on the Jets 9 yard line poised to take an early lead. But the drive and the game would take a dramatic turn for both teams.

First, Jets defensive end Shaun Ellis forces Warner to fumble as the ball is recovered by Edgerrin James. On the very next play, Warner completes a 3 yard pass to Boldin who gets stripped by Hank Poteat who runs it to their own 43. It would be the only time New York would not capitalize on the Cardinals miscues.

After a scoreless first quarter, the Jets defense would attack Warner every way imaginable. After taking a 7-0 lead on a 12 yard pass from Favre to Laveranues Coles, Warner gets pressured and tries to hit Ben Patrick with a short pass. Derrelle Revis steps in front for the interception and scampers 36 yard for the touchdown. The defense continued to get after Warner and 7 plays later had the ball back. From their own 17, Thomas Jones takes a short Favre pass for 19 yards. Brad Smith adds 17 yards with a run off left end and Leon Washington’s 13 yards puts them on the Cardinals 34.

That’s when Favre and Coles would once again get in the end zone. Lining up on the left side, Coles runs straight up field. Cardinals cornerback Eric Green falls down trying to run with Coles as Favre finds him all alone for the 34 yard touchdown pass. The third time would be a charm for the new Jets quarterback and the wide receiver who was devastated when his best friend Chad Pennington was released. After adding 3 more points on a Jay Feely field goal, (they got the ball back on a Eric Green interception) Calvin Pace pounds on Warner forcing the fumble that is recovered by David Harris.7 plays later, the duo would make history as Favre hits Coles for a 2 yard touchdown pass. The first time in his career Coles would catch 3 touchdown passes in a game. With 10 seconds left before half, Warner elected to pass instead of kneeling. He is once again stripped, this time by David Bowens. Feely gives New York 3 more points and a 34-0 lead.

Game over, right? In the immortal words of ESPN’s college analyst Lee Corso, “not so fast my friends.” Just as fast as the Cardinals found themselves down by 34, they came out in the third quarter and put up 21 points. James scores on runs of 4 and 2 yards, adding 2 more points after the second score. Arizona helped themselves by recovering their on-sides kick leading to their third score. Suddenly, the Jets were only up by two scores and the momentum clearly on the side of Arizona.

After taking the third quarter off, Favre continued his offensive magic. His 4th and 5th touchdown passes (both to Jericho Cotchery) put the game out of reach. The 5th came after Warner once again pulled his team within two scores after an 8 yard pass to Boldin. The Jets were looking at a 4th and 1 from their own 40. Instead of trying to pull Arizona off-sides or running for the first down to keep the clock running, Favre fakes the hand-off as Cotchery runs past the Cardinals secondary for the 40 yard reception. Another meaningless touchdown from Warner to Jerheme Urban would just pad his stats on a day where Arizona could not escape the mistakes of the first half. Favre would answer one more time with his 6th touchdown of the day, finding tight end Dustin Keller on a 24 yard pass. Again, the Jets were faced with a 4th down and 5 situation.

Arizona would lose for the 16th time in their last 18 games against east coast teams as they turned the ball over 6 times. The Jets offense finally looked like they imagined it could be with the man with the golden arm as their leader.
