Flash Back Thursday: Carlos Ortiz Honored By Latino Sports

on

Puerto Rico is considered one of the top countries in the world of Boxing. The island nation has had 72 World Boxing titles. That’s more than many major developed countries.

Boxing is a major sport in Puerto Rico and in our Latino communities and that is why on March 1994 Latino Sports honored Carlos Ortiz. Then as now, we don’t want the sports icons of the past that gave us so much pride to be forgotten.

Ortiz had become the first Puerto Rican world boxing champion since Sixto Escobar who was the first Puerto Rican World Boxing Champion more than 30 years before, and only the second Puerto Rican world boxing champion ever. Unfortunately for him, not much importance was being given to that division at the time, since that division’s title had been vacant for 13 years.

Latino Sports believes that it is important to recognize those sports icons of tha past as well as those of the future.
