BRONX, N.Y. (July 5, 2016) – Harlem RBI and StarKist recently stepped up to the plate with Feed the Children to provide 800 South Bronx families whose children participate in the Harlem RBI program with food and essentials as part of MLB’s — through the Reviving Baseball in Inner Cities (RBI) program – partnership with Feed the Children.
The event took place last Thurs., June 23 at Patterson Playground in the South Bronx.
Participating RBI families received a 25-pound food box; a 10-pound box of basic essentials –shampoo, conditioner, lotion, and personal-care items; and a box of assorted Avon products. Families also received Disney Books, children toys provided by K.I.D.S. and additional product provided by StarKist and Deep River Snacks.
New York Yankees outfielder Brett Gardner and his wife Jessica joined the volunteers from StarKist, Harlem RBI, Hain Celestial, Cbiz, and Feed the Children were onsite serving and assisting families, as well as Feed the Children president and CEO, J.C. Watts, Jr.
“Together we can be our neighbors’ helper by providing food and essentials to those in need,” said J.C. Watts, Jr., Feed the Children president and CEO. “With Major League Baseball and StarKist’s partnership we can help families in our nation’s own backyard. The event is one of many that Feed the Children has planned across the country this year to help feed bodies, minds and futures. In Bronx County alone, nearly 32 percent of families live below the poverty line and are unsure of how they will provide their next meal.”
This event is part of a 13-city partnership between Feed the Children and Major League Baseball across the country throughout the summer months. Each event will consist of a food distribution and a community resource fair which families can attend to learn more about the resources available to them in the following categories: Health and Wellness, Career and Family Services, Nutrition, and Kids Services.
