Indíos De Mayagüez Champions of Puerto Rico Baseball


Mayagüez was in pure festive mood yesterday after the The Indíos de Mayagüez defeated the Criollos de Caguas 5-1 yesterday at home to once again be crowned the Champions of the Puerto Rican Winter Baseball League. The Indíos who were managed by Carlos Baerga (LatinoMVP winner 1992) and had won the round robin playoffs 4-2 and thus win the title.

As in years past the final game had come down to Mayagüez and Caguas two strong teams. However, unlike last year when Caguas won, this year Carlos Baerga and his tribe pulled off the win with a dramatic 8th inning grand slam by Kennys Vargas off reliever José De la Torre to break the 1-1 tie. This is the 19th championship for the Indíos making them the team with the most championships in Puerto Rico with 19. They are followed by los Criollos de Caguas with 17.

Los Indíos de Mayagüez will now represent Puerto Rico in the Caribbean Series scheduled for next week Saturday February 1st in the Margarita Island, Venezuela. For a more detailed recap, go to the
