New York, NY – Thursday night, the night before Friday night and I’m behind my laptop reviewing my emails. Some emails are worth reading. Others are promising me a fortune.

Which is true? Which is false? The joys of reviewing my emails. One cool email I received were from the fine folks of Volkswagen.

Someone who works their must have known that when I grew up in the South Bronx during the topsy-turvy ’80’s, the Los Angeles Lakers were my favorite NBA team. The squad that known as Showtime was the best basketball squad I had ever watched on my telly.

Showtime… Magic Johson, James Worthy, Byron Scott, Kurt Rambis, A.C. Green, Michael Cooper, Kareem Abdul-Jabar and their coach, Pat Riley… Wow!

With that said, here’s the press release that came my way…

Los Angeles, CA – Los Angeles Lakers icons Kareem Abdul-Jabar and James Worthy were surprise guests at Volkswagen’s press conference during the  today.

To prove just how large the new Atlas actually is, the brand asked some of the largest American basketball legends for assistance. As the new vehicle was introduced to the audience, they were surprised to see Los Angeles Lakers legends Kareem Abdul-Jabar and James Worthy emerge.

Worthy remarked, “As a group of really big guys, we look for a vehicle that provides comfort. And I gotta tell you. We’re just fine in there. It’s really nice!”

Hinrich Woebcken,CEO of Volkswagen Group of America, and Jürgen Stackmann, Member of the Board of Management for Volkswagen Brand Sales, Marketing, Aftersales, kicked off the press conference by showcasing some of the brand’s latest models, and went on to announce Volkswagen’s entry into the mid-size SUV market with the 2018 Atlas – the largest Volkswagen ever assembled in America!

Built for the modern American family, the Atlas is Volkswagen’s bid to “enter into the heart of the American market,” said Hinrich Woebcken, CEO of Volkswagen Group of America.

With family in mind, Volkswagen concluded the press conference by presenting a donation to the Lakers Youth Foundation, whose mission is to help underserved youth in Los Angeles develop their potential by providing positive experiences and resources in education, health and wellness, and sports.

Engineered from Volkswagen’s award-winning Modular Transverse Matrix (MQB) architecture, the Atlas draws on the latest Volkswagen design DNA to create a bold new look in the SUV segment. At 198.3 inches long, 77.9 inches wide, and 69.6 inches high, Atlas is larger than any other Volkswagen on sale in the U.S., yet it retains classic proportions and clean lines that create a sense of timelessness and precision.

Up front, standard LED headlights and LED Daytime Running Lights combine for a unique visual signature, with optional LED tail lights to complete the look. Inside, the Atlas makes maximum use of its dimensions to offer space for seven adults and their luggage.

The third-row can be easily reached by an innovative folding seat solution, one that works even with child seats installed in the second row.

Simple, driver-centric displays enhance the feeling behind the wheel rather than distracting from it; while the available Volkswagen Digital Cockpit allows drivers to reconfigure how they view vehicle information.
