Monica Puig, the rising Puerto Rican tennis star defeated, Daniella Hantuchova yesterday, 6-0, 4-6, 6-0 to advance to the second round in the 2014 World Tennis Association in Rome.

Monica who is ranked No. 60 in the WTA, was absent from the tour on February, but returned in March to lose in the opening round at Indian Wells and the second round in Miami.

She would then reach the quarter-final in Monterrey, the first round in Portugal and would fail to qualify for Madrid. Monica will now face the Russian Superstar and two-time champion. Maria Sharapova ranked #7 in the world.

This marks the first time these two competitors will face off in a professional tour, and all bets are on Sharapova. However, Monica has already won the praise of many of her Caribbean followers, especially those on her home island of Puerto Rico.
