Latino Sports Beats BronxNet In Annual Celebrity Basketball Game For Family Health

on

Bronx, NY: On Sunday August 27th, 2017 Latino Sports held its 23rd annual Celebrity Basketball Game and Family Health Day at Orchard Beach, considered one of the most popular community health events in the borough.

The event starts with an annual rivalry game between BronxNet and Latino Sports playing a friendly, but competitive basketball game. Latino Sports beat BronxNet by a score of 89 to 69 and will now bring back the “Bragging Rights” trophy to Latino Sports who lost last year to BronxNet.

This fun game is followed by another annual game between senior players of the

Harlem Leagues and known as the Harlem Legends Vs. the Puerto Rican All Star Legends, seniors who have played in the Puerto Rican Superior Basketball League, coached by Santos Negrón, an East Harlem sports activist. Both games provide a lot of competition and fun.

In between games and half times the spectators and beachgoers were constantly reminded to get free medical screenings on three of the major causes for heart attacks: cholesterol levels, sugar and blood pressure. The screenings were provided by Bronx Lebanon Hospital and the Martin Luther King clinic.

Half time also provided Zumba classes and information on light exercise to help family and individuals stay healthy in a borough that is considered the unhealthiest in the state.

These games have become an annual pilgrimage where people who might not see each other in a year will always meet again at Orchard Beach basketball courts and many look forward to getting their annual free screenings.

Thanks to the following community sponsors who have made this years game possible:

BronxNet, Bronx Lebanon Hospital Center, Martin Luther King Clinic, NY Yankees, 45th Police Prescient Community Affairs, New York City Parks & Recreation, Hoops In The Sun & Printed Graphics.
