Bronx, NY – Sebastian Giovinco had three goals and an assist to lead Toronto FC to a 5-0 win over New York City FC in the second leg of the Eastern Conference semifinals in front of 28,355 at Yankee Stadium Sunday night.

Toronto FC wins the two-legged aggregate series 7-0 and advances to face the Montreal Impact in the Eastern Conference finals. Giovinco put the visitors in front on six minutes on a low shot from 17 yards out and added a second from the penalty spot in the 20thminute.

Jozy Altidore made it 3-0 in the 30th minute when he latched onto a ball over the top by Eriq Zavaleta and fired in a blast off the bounce from the edge of the six-yard box. NYCFC’s best scoring chance of the first half came in the 38th minute when Frank Lampard put a shot from distance on frame, but TFC goalkeeper Clint Irwin dived to parry it away for a corner kick.

Jonathan Osorio gave TFC a 4-0 lead when he tapped in a square pass from Will Johnson five minutes into the second half. Giovinco had his hat trick in the first minute of second-half stoppage time.

Quotes from New York City FC Head Coach Patrick Vieira

On the fans…

“This is why it’s really hard today the way we lost, because the fans responded to what I wanted from them. They were fantastic. When we arrived to the Stadium there was around 100 people outside welcoming the players, really loud, making noise.

The message from David and myself in the dressing room was that we don’t know what is going to happen at the end of the game, but we wanted to give something back to the fans. That’s why we are disappointed. We didn’t fulfill the expectations from the fans. They were there, they were present, and they were behind our back.

Today, yes, we let them down, but the message for them is to think about the first game that we played, to look at how the team improved, and this team will be better next season. I

want to thank them all for their support, I think they have been fantastic, they’ve been behind the team, they traveled to Toronto, and today they were fantastic. So the only thing I can promise to them is that we will come back next season with more determination, more anger, and do better than we did this year.”

On his takeaway from this seaon …

“I’m actually really proud of the players because I strongly believe all this season they’ve been working really hard, they’ve been giving me everything and the game tonight doesn’t really reflect the way the players conduct themselves all season.

But on the other side, as a football club, we want to improve, we want to be better and it will be important for us to make some strong decisions because we want to challenge teams like Toronto next season.”
