Puerto Rico blanked by Dominicans 3-0: Mexico Caribbean Baseball Champs

on

Well, let’s make a reassessment of the situation: The Dominican Republic is not Puerto Rico’s rival; they are its nemesis. In the last 10 years these country’s teams have played 18 games of which the DR has won 14 and Puerto Rico, four. Now the record is 19-4: Rivals?  It is just that when the record books are closed on this Series, the Dominicans have won 18 Caribbean Series and Puerto Rico 14.

Venezuela and Cuba have 7 each (but Cuba has been out of the mix for years – it won its last championship in 1960).

Mexico, with this Mayaüez Classic has won 6 and this is the first one for the Yaquis de Obrégon

Panama, who did not participate, has one (1950).

Puerto Rico Offense Shut down

Puerto Rico just scratched out 4 hits. On the top of the 8th they managed to load the bases but a looming smash of the bat of DH Pedro Valdez was gloved  by Dominican RF Ricardo Nanita as he bounced off the wall in right center field. That was the only real threat Puerto Rico made in the whole game.

Puerto Rico starter William Collazo was victimized again by errors. He went 6.2 innings allowing 5 hits, 3 runs (only one earned) with one base on balls and two strikeouts.

In the meantime Dominican starter Raul Valdez went 7.2 innings, allowed no runs and just 4 hits and struck out six batters (1 BB).

And this must have been the first game to end at a decent hour, around 11:15 local time.
