Bronx, NY – The 161st Street Business Improvement District (BID) announced that it has commissioned Shintaro Okamoto to carve a statue of Yankee great, Mariano Rivera, as part of its Winterfest celebration. Okamoto is an internationally renowned sculptor whose work has been featured in most major media and on the Grammy

“We want the neighborhood to be a part of this historic event, the Stadium Series, the NHL at Yankee Stadium. Shintaro’s artwork will give hockey fans, Yankee fans and neighbors something wonderful to see. The sculpture will honor the pitcher, celebrate the renaming of River Avenue in his name and enhance the beauty of the district,” said Dr. Cary Goodman, the BID’s executive director.

In addition to the Rivera ice sculpture, Winterfest will feature free souvenirs, games and great sports bars, food and shopping.
