Spain's Calderon Isn't Enough

New York, NY – While the New York Knicks were busy introducing the new additions to their team in Chris Wilcox and Larry Hughes and explaining how they would fit in their system, the Toronto Raptors were looking to see if they could keep their point guard, Jose Calderon, healthy for the rest of the season.

Entering his 4th year in the NBA, Calderon, from Spain, has been battling a nagging right hamstring injury most of the season. He first tweaked the hammy early in the year (Nov. 19) against Miami. He worked through it until the injury resurfaced in the beginning of January causing him to miss 10-of-11 games.

Ironically, he has put up his best numbers since becoming a pro. He has averaged a 13.1 ppg and more than 33 mpg. His head coach Jay Triano has taken notice. “He looks after the basketball, controls the team, finds the right guys at the right time. He’s just been very steady.” Could the increased numbers be the cause of his leg problems? Coach does not seem to think so. “I guess if we went back to the start of the season, we might want to modify it. This is something he’s got to fight through.” Calderon, prior to facing the Knicks, agreed with his coach. “It’s just bad luck. I want to play and be out their every night. I know when I get rest, it’s going to be alright.”

Jose Calderon’s  tender hamstring was the least of his and the Raptors' probelms Friday night as the Knicks jumped all over them right from the start. New York scored the first nine points of the game and never looked back.

Calderon did all he could scoring four points, dishing out four assists. He had no help as the Knicks took a 20-point first period lead. With the margin expanding to as many as 38 in the 3rd, Triano called it a night for Calderon, who played 26 minutes, scoring nine points with 10 assists.

Afterwards, Calderon talked about the Knicks quick start. “It was a very good quarter for them. That was the key of the game. After that, they were just feeling good. It was very difficult to try to do something being 20 points down.”

The New York Knicks will have a tough time trying to fit the new guys Wilcox and Hughes in their system, especially if they keep playing this well. The Toronto Raptors have to find a way to keep Jose Calderon healthy if they have any chance of making the playoffs.
