Sunday Fútbol: Red Bulls Crush NYCFC

HARRISON, N.J. – The New York Red Bulls defeated New York City FC, 4-1 on Sunday afternoon at Red Bull Arena behind two goals from Bradley Wright-Phillips and a goal and two assists from Sacha Kljestan.

New York won the season series against New York City FC, 2-1, and has won five of the six all-time meetings.

The Red Bulls are now 9-9-4 on the season, and 8-2-1 at home. The Red Bulls have scored the most goals in the league, 36, and are tied for the most wins in the Eastern Conference. The victory puts New York into second place in the East, two points behind NYC FC.

Bradley Wright-Phillips got his first in the 20th minute. The forward was played into the box by Sacha Kljestan, who slotted the ball through two defenders and put Wright-Phillips into position to place a shot beyond Josh Saunders and inside the far post.

Ronald Zubar doubled the advantage in the 23rd minute with his second of the season, freeing himself on a corner kick and heading home a corner kick from Kljestan.

Kljestan would get a goal of his own in the 41st minute, converting a penalty after a handball inside the NYC FC penalty area.

Kljestan has three goals and two assists over the last two games since being named an MLS All-Star. The midfielder has five goals and a league-leading 12 assists this season.

Bradley Wright-Phillips put the game away in the 70th minute with his 11th of the season, beating an NYC defender to a ball of the head of Homegrown rookie Alex Muyl, taking two touches to elude Saunders and deposit the ball into the open net. Wright-Phillips is tied for third in MLS with 11 goals this season. He is just two goals shy of Juan Pablo Angel’s franchise record for regular season goals.

Luis Robles made his 128th consecutive league start in the match, and was not required to make a save to earn the win.

The Red Bulls travel to Chicago next weekend for a match against the Fire on Sunday, July 31. Kickoff is set for 7 p.m. ET, with coverage on MSG and Red Bulls Radio. New York is next home for the first match of the Scotiabank CONCACAF Champions League group stage against Antigua Guatemala FC on Wednesday, August 3.
