New York, NY – Before Saturday’s UFC 205: ALVAREZ vs. McGREGOR kicks off at Madison Square Garden, media members had the opportunity to interview the fighters who will be fighting on that evening. Titled Ulitmate Media Day, I enjoyed the experience.

Here’s a rundown of the fighters I had the honor of chatting with. Some I spoke in great length. Others, the conversation was brief and pleasant. Granted, having cauliflower ears help but at end of the day, we have our unique stories.

Their stories are inspirational and I believe they enjoyed the conversations. When the fighters were going up the podium for their customary stare down, this was our moment. I stayed with Kelvin Gastelum, Chris Weidman, Miesha Tate, Frankie Edgar, Jim Miller and Liz Carmouche. Before some of them went up, the commented about, “The Feeling.”

If you’ve ever competed in sports or wanted something so bad, you’ll know what I’m talkng about. The Feeling… room temperature changes, your body perspires, you tense up, your jaw hardens up, your vision becomes clear while your heart temperature is calm because you’re prepared… The Feeling.

It was truly a bonding moment and possibly one the best sporting moments I’ve ever experienced. For those few and precious minutes, we were connected. Not as fighters but as human beings. With that said, here’s a word association for each fighter…

  • Kelvin Gastelum – No. 5 UFC welterweight: Lighthearted
  • Chris Weidman – No. 2 UFC middleweight: Determined
  • Yoel Romero – No. 4 UFC middleweight: Spiritual
  • Miesha Tate – No. 1 UFC women’s bantamweight: Realistic
  • Frankie Edgar – No. 2 UFC featherweight: Grit
  • Jim Miller – UFC lightweight: Tough
  • Thiago Alves – UFC lightweight: Reborn
  • Belal Muhammad – UFC welterweight: Ambitious
  • Liz Carmouche – No. 9 UFC women’s bantamweight: Inspirational
  • Katlyn Chookagian – No. 14 UFC women’s bantamweight: Potential
