NEW YORK ISLANDERS LOSE TO FLYERS: PLAYOFF FOE UP FOR GRABS NOW

on

The New York Islanders were in a great position when they clinched a playoff berth with two road games remaining against two teams who were out of the playoff race.

Now after a tight 2-1 loss to Philadelphia, The Isles are now in a three way tie for the 6th to 8th positions. The importance now of finishing above the last stop is to avoid the Pittsburgh Penguins in a first round matchup. Here are the Islanders three possible playoff opponents and how they stack up against them according to regular season matchups.

PITTSBURGH: They are the number one seed by a wide margin. More importantly they are the only elite team the Isles have had trouble with all season. They have lost four of five contests. After a 4-1 win, the Isles have been defeated 4-2, 6-1, 4-2, and 2-0.

BOSTON: The Islanders did not start well losing 4-2 and 4-1 earlier in the season but hanging tough in both. But a 2-1 victory during their hot run makes a match against the Bruins more of a possibility for success.

WASHINGTON: This is a team that has been good to the Isles. New York scored 5-2 and 3-2 wins. When Washington reversed its negative course to win their division, the Isles fought that Cap team to a shootout before falling.

So, tonight’s battle in Buffalo against the Sabres would seem to mean as much to help determine a more favorable opening opponent. The numbers imply that eighth place is where the Islanders do not want to be.
