Cabo Rojo, PR: Here in Puerto Rico the winter baseball season is in its post season and will soon end with one team crowned champions. The four teams in the finals are: Los Criollos de Caguas, Indios de Mayagüez, Cangrejeros de Santurce and the Gigantes de Carolina. Boricuas love baseball. Same could be said for our sister island Dominican Republic. However, having visited, watched and covered games in all the Greater Antilles, I can unequivocally state that Cuba’s passion for baseball is beyond any of the three island countries. In Cuba baseball is religion.
That leads me to the fact that Cuba with a strict and abusive U.S. embargo still manages to have some of the top Latinos in baseball. While we know that Dominicans and Venezuelans have the most active players, Cuba had approximately 22 players in 2021. The fact that Puerto Rico, a U.S. colony with full access to the mainland had a total of 30 players can make one understand the incredible potential of Cuban baseball and Cuban players.
Below is an article on the top ten Cuban prospects. Imagine if there was no blockade against Cuba and that Cuban baseball players would be allowed to play in the Major Leagues here without having to defect? I would say that Cubans would be the majority baseball players then followed by Dominicans.
