New Approach To Growing Healthcare Worker Crisis Offers Opportunities For Hispanic And Blacks Workers In California & Nationwide
— Innovative Worker-Owned Cooperative Resolves Healthcare Staffing Shortages with Higher Wages, Career Pipeline, Flexibility, Benefits, and Ownership Stake for Workers —
ONTARIO, CA — May 12, 2022 — (NOTICIAS NEWSWIRE) — As the COVID-19 pandemic creates havoc with patients, hospitals, and healthcare facilities nationwide, a new organization, AlliedUP, is actively reaching out to workers, especially in underserved markets, interested in jobs at hospitals and healthcare facility jobs.
In less than two years, the healthcare sector has lost almost 500,000 workers, according to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics. And a survey by Morning Consult last fall underscored the ongoing healthcare worker crisis: since February 2020, their research found that 30% of U.S. healthcare workers have lost their jobs (12 %) or quit (18%). An additional 31% said they considered leaving their employers during the pandemic.
Now, AlliedUP has found a way to make healthcare jobs attractive by improving family health and financial security. As the only union healthcare staffing company in the country, it ensures higher wages, healthcare benefits, and better work conditions. The workers have access to training and education programs paid for by the cooperative. The workers -certified assistants to operations staff, clinical staff, and registered nurses - have the flexibility to choose full-time positions, short- or long-term assignments, or on-call shifts.
“I am so grateful to be on the AlliedUP team,” said David Ngo, a registered nurse at MedSurge. “It’s a refreshing, new approach to working in healthcare, and the caring culture really sold me. Because of the union-scale pay, full benefits, education, and an online support community, I have referred several of my travel-nurse friends who are joining the team too.”
Acknowledging that Latino and Black workers have cited unequal conditions and low pay working in healthcare, AlliedUP CEO Carey Carpineta said the cooperative cares about racial equity and seeks to level the playing field for people of color. “We strongly believe that offering higher wages, and paths to career success, helps move the nation towards equality,” she said. “Our flexibility allows workers to manage their lives and realize their aspirations as parents and community members. More than anything our workers are respected.”
The cooperative launched last fall and is on track to place nearly 1,000 new workers this year, and recruit another 3,000 by the end of 2023. It provides hospitals and health facilities with qualified, trained, and engaged workers.
Yvette Romero, a medical assistant, working with the Los Angeles Christian Health Center (LACHC) in Los Angeles, said: “I love working with AlliedUP. Everything is made so easy and straightforward. It’s been great. In fact, I have had other opportunities to leave my current job but have stayed. Basically, the private practices do not provide the same opportunities as I have now. It’s very flexible and a lot of opportunities to learn a lot more so I can make a better living. There are also the benefits in this job, which I would not have at the private practice.”
