Ahora, del primer cuadrangular de Ruth en el Clásico el Otoño, hará cien años dentro de unos días, porque surgió el sábado nueve de octubre de 1921, durante el cuarto juego frente a los Gigantes, en cuenta de cero y uno, ante 36 mil 372 espectadores. La pelota dibujó enorme y elevado arco para sobrepasar las bardas del right field.
Estaba entonces Ruth en sus 26 juveniles años de edad, era tercer bate y left fielder, había sacado 59 jonrones en la campaña, armando un escándalo y titulándose líder por tercer año consecutivo. Antes, con 29 en 1919 y 54 en 1920.
El Babe había sido el tercero de la Americana al bate, con 378 de promedio; pero líder en impulsadas, 168; y en anotadas, 177.
Aquella Serie, que era a máximo de nueve juegos, la ganaron los Gigantes en ocho. Por cierto, se jugó toda en Polo Grounds, la casa de los Gigantes, porque ahí eran también home club los Yankees, ya que apenas comenzaba la construcción de Yankee Stadium, inaugurado en 1923.
El Babe jugaba con enormes vendas en el brazo izquierdo, porque sufría de un absceso en el codo, que le causaba fuertes dolores. En el cuarto juego, aparecía Chick Fewster como left fielder en la alineación inicial. Pero a última hora, Ruth convenció al mánager, Miller Huggins, de que él podía jugar adolorido y todo.
Finalmente, Ruth estuvo fuera de la acción en los últimos dos juegos.
