Impossible to Play Against Baseball
“The little book” has never existed, But for a century and a half it has been said that “in baseball, playing against the book is always very costly.”
That happened last night to the Dodgers manager, Dave Roberts. Let me tell you:
At Dodger Stadium, they were playing against their archrival from San Diego. They were losing 4-2. But, in the second inning of the ninth inning, they put runners on first and second, with no outs, and the ninth in the lineup, Miguel Rojas, was at bat. Robert Suárez was pitching.
The on deck man waiting his turn to bat, was none other than Shohei Ohtani and then Mookie Betts.
The bunt was from pitch to pitch. And Rojas tried it against the first pitch, but it was zero and one.
On Suárez’s second pitch, Rojas swung, produced a grounder to third, Manny Machado picked it up, touched the base, threw to second, from there to first, three outs in one play 5,4,3, for a 4-2 San Diego win.
My friends at Larry Brown Sports asked Roberts if he had changed the sign. The answer:
“Yes, yes. Because when Rojas missed the bunt, the whole infield was in a bad position, trying to prevent the sacrifice. I assumed that any hit would go through them. But that one on third didn’t go through.”
The Padres secured their postseason berth.

Imposible Jugar Contra el Beisbol
“El librito” nunca ha existido, pero durante Siglo y medio se ha dicho que “en el beisbol, jugar contra el librito, siempre sale muy costoso”.
Eso le ocurrió antenoche al mánager de los Dodgers, Dave Roberts. Les informo:
En Dodger Stadium, jugaban frente a sus archirrivales de San Diego. Perdían 4-2. Pero, en la segunda entrada del noveno inning, pusieron corredores en primera y en segunda, sin outs, y al bate el noveno en la alineación, Miguel Rojas. Lanzaba Robert Suárez.
El prevenido al bate era, nada menos que Shohei Ohtani y después Mookie Betts.
El toque de bola estaba de bola a bola. Y lo intentó Rojas frente al primer lanzamiento, pero se puso en cero y uno.
Al segundo envío de Suárez, Rojas le hizo swing, produjo roletazo de frente a tercera, Manny Machado recogió, piso la base, tiró a segunda, de ahí a primera, ¡tres outs en una jugada! para victoria de San Diego, 4-2.
Mis amigos de Larry Brown Sports, le preguntaron a Roberts si había cambiado la señal. La respuesta:
“Así es. Porque cuando Rojas falló el toque, todo el infield estaba mal acomodado. tratando de impedir el sacrificio. Supuse que cualquier batazo pasaría entre ellos. Pero ese por tercera no pasó”.
Los Padres aseguraron su puesto en la postemporada.
