Coral Gables, Florida (VIP-WIRE) – Once again, San Felipe native Luis Arráez is expected to sign for 10 or more seasons and a big wad of dollars.
Arráez, 28, has not only won three batting titles in the Major Leagues (Twins, with .316, in 2022; Marlins, .354, in 2023; and Padres, .314, in 2024), but, as you can see, that is a record in consecutive years.
Those titles are matched by José Altuve, among the active players, and also by great figures of the past, such as Pete Rose, Carl Yastrzemski and George Brett. But no one was able to achieve such titles in three consecutive years before.
The question is, how and why, if Arráez is such a good hitter, has he not been contracted for 10 or more seasons and for 500 or more million dollars, $50 million annually?
That is what 22 colleagues from the Major League Baseball Writers Association of America asked themselves on Wednesday, who invited me to study the case.
With the help of Zoom, we met for more than three hours, examining multitudinous negotiations of a few big leaguers. We concluded that Luis, who will turn 28 on April 9, does deserve a large, multimillion-dollar contract. But teams shy away from such a commitment, because he is not a power hitter. He has hit 28 home runs in his six seasons.
Of course, the millions are reserved, in most cases, for prolific home run hitters and pitchers with fastballs in the 90s.
Luis Arráez earned his biggest salary in 2024, when the Padres paid him $10.6 million.
Luis can now go to arbitration and in 2026 he will be on time to declare himself a free agent.
Luis’ agents, MVP Sports Group, have been very busy these days of the new year, trying to avoid arbitration by signing a big contract.
A spokesperson for that firm told me: “All the teams we have touched seem very interested in Luis. But when we get to the moment of closing the deal, there is always an excuse to prolong the wait.”

Por qué Luis Arráez No Cobra $50 Millones

Así se lo preguntaban el miércoles 22 compañeros de la Major League Baseball Writers Association of América, quienes me invitaron a estudiar el caso.
Con la ayuda de Zoom, estuvimos reunidos más de tres horas, examinando negociaciones multitudinarias de unos cuantos bigleaguers. Concluimos en que Luis, quien cumplirá sus 28 años el nueve de abril, sí merece un contrato grande y multimillonario. Pero los equipos le huyen a tal compromiso, porque él no es bateador de poder. Ha disparado 28 jonrones en sus seis temporadas.
Por supuesto, los millones están reservados, en la mayoría de los casos, para los jonroneros prolíficos y para los lanzadores con rectas por las 90 millas.
Luis Arráez cobró su mayores honorarios en 2024, cuando los Padres le pagaron 10 millones 600 mil dólares.
