In this Here and Now, which you call the Beyond, I am celebrating with all my might that a few days ago, on Friday, you joined the Tijuana Bulls as a much-desired manager, at the age of 61, which, incidentally, you turned 61 on Wednesday.
Your brilliant 14-year career in the Major Leagues, as a center fielder, the first six and the last with the Yankees, and the work you have done since 2000 as a coach and manager, are tremendous credentials for a team as important as this one on the border to have given you the permanent willingness to fight for victory every time, with all your might.
Yes, my dear Roberto, the Bulls are like the Yankees during George Steinbrenner’s time, convinced they have what it takes to win every day of the season.
You know me because you’ve heard my story. Between 1955 and 1960, I was the first player from your country, Panama, in the Major Leagues.
I know you feel very comfortable in this Mexican League, where you’ve been successful, and where they love you enthusiastically.
The Toros’ efficient press services were very active these days, preparing for your welcome, which finally became official on Friday, when you said:
“I’ve always dreamed of being the manager of this team. The Toros’ vision excites me. These people want to do things right. That’s what President Omar Cañizares and Sporting Director Guillermo Armenta presented to me.

Now, Roberto, your entire life has been dedicated 100 percent to baseball, both in your years as a center fielder and later as a coach and manager. So, how is it possible that you’ve had time to bring ten children into this world?
Well, I imagine the answer is logical: Blanca, your beautiful wife, sister of Juan González, a Puerto Rican who was also a big leaguer. In that respect, you’ve been glorious with her as well.

Mis querido Roberto:
En este Más Acá, que ustedes llaman Más Allá, estoy celebrando a todo dar, que hace unos días, el viernes, hayas llegado a los Toros de Tijuana en plan de mánager muy deseado, a los 61 años de edad, cumplidos, por cierto, el miércoles.
Tu brillante carrera de 14 años en Grandes Ligas, como center fielder, los primeros seis y el último con los Yankees, y la labor que has desempeñado después, desde el 2000, como coach y mánager, son tremenda credencial para que un equipo tan importante como éste de la frontera, te haya entregado la disposición permanente en esa casa, por luchar cada vez por la victoria, con todo y por todo.
Sí, mi querido Roberto, los Toros son como los Yankees cuando George Steinbrenner, convencidos de que tienen con qué ganar todos los días de la temporada.
Me conoces, porque te han contado mi historia. Entre 1955 y 1960, fui el primer pelotero de tu país, Panamá, en Grandes Ligas.
Ya sé que te sientes muy bien en esta Liga Mexicana, en la cual has sido triunfador, y donde te quieren con entusiasmo,
Los eficientes servicios de prensa de los Toros, estuvieron muy activos en estos días, preparándote la bienvenida, que finalmente fue oficial el viernes, cuando dijiste:
“Soñé siempre con ser mánager de este equipo. La visión de los Toros me emociona. Esta gente quiere hacer las cosas bien. Eso fue lo que me presentaron el Presidente, Omar Cañizares, y el Director Deportivo, Guillermo Armenta.
“Con George Steinbrenner perseguíamos un objetivo primario, ganar día tras día . Con los Toros es igual”.
Ahora, Roberto, toda tu vida te has dedicado ciento por ciento al beisbol, tanto en tus años de center fielder, como después, de coach y de mánager. Entonces, ¡¿cómo es posible que hayas tenido tiempo para traer a este mundo a diez hijos?
Bueno, me imagino que la respuesta es lógica: Blanca, tu preciosa esposa, hermana de Juan González, boricua que fue también big leaguer. En eso igualmente, has sido con ella, glorioso.
