When the Series began, few people outside of Toronto knew your name. They were asking, “John, what?!”
Now the most famous player in the Series is John Schneider, and your players are the most admired, even though they aren’t the winners. Only Yoshinobu Yamamoto deserves high praise from the Dodgers… and they are the World Champions!
Oh, well, you know I was a manager in the Major Leagues for 50 years, from 1901 to 1950. But no credit, because I owned the Philadelphia Athletics, so there was no one to fire me. My full name, then, is Cornelius McGillicuddy.
Such was the admiration and affection for your team, my dear John, that according to a BetOnline poll, the majority of people in 46 of the 50 states wanted them to win. The four exceptions were: California, of course, Hawaii, Nevada, and Utah.
I’ll tell you what I thought: If the Dodgers lost the Series, there would be an earthquake in Los Angeles.
The problem has been obvious for years: they’re arrogant. Very few people like them out of their city.
But I don’t, and I know you don’t either. We congratulate the Dodgers, their manager, Dave Roberts, and their World Series MVP, Yamamoto. They’ve won the World Series title two years in a row.
My friend John: I hope you keep winning games and become one of the winningest managers in history. You’re a tremendous person, which makes you important to our game.
