Those of us who have pitched for the Yankees, those of us whose Yankees uniform numbers have been retired, and, in short, the entire Yankees community, are celebrating because on Wednesday, September 26, there will be a party at Yankee Stadium as they retire your uniform number, 52, before the game against the Orioles.
I’ve been in this Here and Now, which you call the Afterlife, since October 8, 2020, 13 days shy of my 92nd birthday.
Well, you played with the Indians and Brewers before your 11 years with the Yankees. And you were truly great in those 11 seasons.
That’s why you appear among the distinguished pitchers in the Bronx:
Mariano Rivera, unparalleled, with 1,115 games pitched, the absolute benchmark for closers; Well, I, Whitey Ford (left-handed), most wins (236) in team history, pillar of the dynasties of the 1950s; Andy Pettitte (left-handed), franchise leader in postseason wins (18) and key in the World Series of 1996, 1998, 1999, 2000 and 2009; Ron Guidry (left-handed), Cy Young in 1978, with a historic season (25-3, 1.74); Red Ruffing (right-handed); with 231 wins in six championships; Lefty Gomez (left-handed); iconic pitcher, with 189 wins and multiple championships in the 1930s and 1940s; And of course, CC Sabathia (left-handed): dominant in the modern era, fundamental to winning the 2009 title.
