From 60 Wins in a Year to the Disappearance of 20 Wins in a Season

How can that be surpassed when even 20-game winners have disappeared?
“Ah! But that was in the 19th century,” the skeptics will say.
The 20th Century Record
Well, the 20th Century Record doesn’t seem easy to reach now either, because it stands at 41 wins and has reigned since 1904, when Jack Chesbro set it with the Highlanders, who have been called the Yankees since 1913.
Now, back then, arm care wasn’t a thing. There were starting pitchers who pitched every day, so their careers were very short.
Al Spalding’s Short Career
Albert Goodwill (AL) Spalding had a brilliant career as a Major League pitcher with the Boston Red Sox and Chicago White Sox in the National League. But only for six seasons. Let’s look at his numbers: year, wins, losses, and ERA: 1871, 19-10, 2.36; 1872, 32-8, 1.85; 1873, 41-14, 2.99; 1874, 52-16, 1.92; 1875, 54-5, 1.59; 1876, 47-12, 1.75. And his arm gave up, because in 1877, his record was 0-0 with a 3.27 ERA in 11 innings pitched across four games.
Fewer and Fewer Wins
Before the 20th century, it was common for a pitcher to win 40 or more games. But since 1900, such numbers have become almost unheard of. Only two achieved it in the 20th century: Jack Chesbro, in 1904, 41-12 with a 1.82 ERA; and in his 11-year career, 198-132 with a 2.68 ERA; and Ed Walsh, 40-15 with a 1.42 ERA in 1908; and in his 14 seasons, 195-126 with a 1.82 ERA.

Marichal, Most Victories Among Hispanics
Juan Marichal, from Dominican Republic, is the pitcher with most victories -25- from Latin America.
The Latin American with the most wins in a Major League Baseball season was Dominican Juan Marichal, with the 1966 Giants. He won 25 games, but he couldn’t lead the league in wins because Sandy Koufax, with the Dodgers, won 27.
The Last 30-Game Winner
The last pitcher to win 30 games in Major League Baseball is right-hander Denny McLain, who now, at 82 years old, lives in his hometown of Chicago. In 1968, with the Tigers, he finished with a 31-6 record and a 1.96 ERA, leading them to the World Series, which they won against the Cardinals in seven games.
McLain has been a very special character. In addition to being a star pitcher in the Major Leagues, with a final record of 131-91 and a 2.39 ERA after a 10-season career (1963-1972), he is a professional organist.

The last pitchers with 20 or more wins in a season were, in the American League, Justin Verlander, 21-6, with the Astros in 2019; and in the National League, Mexican Julio Urías, 20-3 in 2021, with the Dodgers.
The Last Notable Pitcher
Nolan Ryan is a native of Refugio, Texas. But when someone asks:
“Is Ryan from Refugio?”
They usually answer: “No sir, Refugio belongs to Ryan.”
Nolan Ryan, now 79, owns the bank, the best hotel, two restaurants, and the largest sporting goods store.
Ryan, a right-hander with lightning speed, pitched in the Majors for 27 seasons (1966-1993), compiling a 324-292 record with a 3.19 ERA. He struck out 5,714 batters and walked 2,795, both records. He led the league in strikeouts 11 times and in walks eight times. He also threw seven no-hitters.
