PONCE, PUERTO RICO — The second annual Puerto Rico Challenge, scheduled for February 13–16, 2026, continues to grow as a meaningful early-season showcase for Division I college baseball while delivering tangible benefits to the island of Puerto Rico. This year’s tournament will welcome eight respected programs—Wake Forest, NC State, Boston College, Indiana State, University of Houston, University of Washington, Seton Hall, and Manhattan University—bringing together elite collegiate talent in a setting that blends competition, culture, and education.
For the participating teams, the Puerto Rico Challenge offers far more than a season-opening series of games. Student-athletes gain invaluable experience competing at a high level away from campus, strengthening team chemistry, and representing their universities on an international stage. The event also exposes players, coaches, and alumni to Puerto Rico’s baseball-rich history and vibrant culture, reinforcing the island’s deep connection to the sport.

According to Jorge Medina, founder of the event and president of Jogi Sports, the vision of the Puerto Rico Challenge extends well beyond the diamond. Medina emphasizes that the tournament is designed as an educational platform that supports the holistic development of student-athletes while also strengthening Puerto Rico’s image as a capable, positive host for top-level sporting events. In doing so, the PR Challenge helps position the island as a destination for future collegiate and international competitions.
The economic impact is also significant. An estimated 3,500 fans, players, coaches, alumni, and family members are expected to travel to Puerto Rico Southern coast, to the town of Ponce for the four-day event where the majority of the games will be played at the historic Francisco “Paquito” Montaner stadium, directly benefiting hotels, restaurants, transportation services, and local businesses that rarely receive the economic impetus that the northern San Juan metropolitan area receives.

While the tournament has received support from some island government organizations and several local sponsors, it remains far from the level of backing a major event of this caliber should command.
As of this writing, the Puerto Rico Challenge does not have a single major sponsor from either the mainland United States or Puerto Rico’s large corporations—entities that would clearly benefit from access to such a concentrated and engaged audience. It is also surprising that major sports networks such as ESPN, MLB Network, or Fox Sports have not chosen to broadcast these highly competitive matchups.

In my opinion, an event like the Puerto Rico Challenge deserves far greater support. It provides a captive tourist audience that stimulates the local economy while also delivering valuable exposure and information to local student-athletes about collegiate athletic opportunities beyond Puerto Rico. With proper backing, this tournament has the potential not only to become a sustainable annual event, but to expand—welcoming more colleges, creating broader educational programming, and opening doors for local youth to envision pathways to higher education through sports.
