Dear friend Miguel: The National Association was not only the first major league baseball league, but also the first league ever.
It was formed at a meeting of team owners on March 17, 1871. The founding clubs were the Boston Red Sox, Chicago White Sox, Cleveland Forest City, Fort Wayne Kekiongas, New York Mutuals, Philadelphia Athletics, Rockford Forest City, and Troy Haymakers.
Some critics argue that the National Association wasn’t a major league, since neither was the National League in the 19th century. They claim that the games were played much like those of the original league; for example, they didn’t use gloves, as gloves hadn’t been invented yet and protecting one’s hands was considered cowardly.
Albert Goodwill Spalding, the renowned pitcher, and Adrian (Cap) Anson, the best hitter of the era and the most notable innovator in baseball history, were products of the National Association.
Anson invented the hit-and-run, the practice of infielders playing wide from their bases, double steals, and other offensive and defensive techniques. He was also the first player to reach 3,000 hits.
Spading pitched for the Red Sox starting in 1871, when he was 20 years old, and was among the founding players of the National Association. Then, from 1876 to 1878, he played in the National League with the Chicago White Stockings. His record was 251-65 with a 2.13 ERA. In 1875, he won 54 games and lost five; and in 1872, he had won 52 and lost 16.
The first baseball player to use a glove was a college catcher, but the first professional player to use one was Spalding, and he made it himself. Upon retiring, he founded his own baseball equipment factory, which was very successful in the 19th century and continues to be so today.

Amigo Migo: La National Association, no solo fue la primera Liga Grande de beisbol, sino también la primera Liga que existió.
Fue formada en reunión de los propietarios de equipos, el 17 de marzo de 1871. Los clubes fundadores fueron, Medias Rojas de Boston, Medias Blancas de Chicago, Forest City de Cleveland, Kekiongas de Ft. Wayne, Mutuals de Nueva York, Atletics de Philadelphia, Forest City de Rockford y Haymakers de Troy.
