BRONX, NY — On a day that carries deep historical weight across Major League Baseball, New York Yankees’ José Caballero embraced the significance of wearing No. 42 in the Bronx, not just for Jackie Robinson, but for a personal connection rooted in his heritage.

Speaking during the Yankees’ monthly Latin media press conference earlier on Wednesday, Caballero reflected on the honor of donning Robinson’s iconic number on Jackie Robinson Day.

“It means everything,” he shared. “Not just for what Jackie did for the game, but also for what it represents for all of us.”

The 29-year-old from Las Tablas, Panama, added that the day holds even deeper meaning because of another legend he grew up admiring—Mariano Rivera.

“As a kid from Panama, Mariano was our hero,” Caballero said. “To wear 42 as a Yankee, that’s special. It’s something I don’t take lightly.”

That pride translated directly onto the field.

Just a few hours later, Caballero delivered in dramatic fashion, ripping a two-run walk-off double that sent Yankee Stadium into a frenzy and cemented his impact early in the season.

The clutch moment, securing the Yankees with a 5-4 win over the Angels, not only showcased his poise but reinforced the trust the Yankees have placed in him during key situations.

Also for Caballero, the performance and the platform go hand in hand.

“You dream of moments like that,” he said, helping the Yankees improve to 10-8 on the year. “Big situations, big stage, especially here in New York. I just wanted to come through for the team.”

Caballero’s emergence has been fueled by a blend of grit and identity. Representing Panama in pinstripes carries responsibility, and he has leaned into it, channeling both Robinson’s legacy and Rivera’s example of excellence.

“It’s about opening doors and representing where you come from,” he said. “That’s what today is about.”

On a day dedicated to breaking barriers and honoring history, Caballero didn’t just reflect on legacy, he added to it, on one swing in the ninth inning.
