Those Amazing Rays

LOS ANGELES, CA — The Dodgers’ Minor League system is an amazing player development program that has kept them at the top of the baseball world for the last 14 years. And that’s despite having to pick at the bottom of the MLB Draft every year.

That’s very good player evaluation by their scouts at the amateur level while the big money gets spent on free agents which has kept them on the winning side of the game.

But the Tampa Bay Rays have also been extremely competitive and at the top of their division for years. They don’t have the money the Dodgers have, and for years, they have watched some of their very talented homegrown players leave for free agency.

So, how do the Rays find and develop so many really good MLB players?

Despite the  Rays remaining in the bottom tier of spending each season, Tampa Bay continues to compete with the best of the best, appearing in the postseason four times since 2020 (2020, 2021, 2022 and 2023) – Image Credit: Francisco Rodriguez/Latino Sports

Number one, they have had one of the best amateur and pro scouting departments in Major League Baseball for years. Couple that with a minor league player development system that is the envy of the league. Director of Amateur Scouting Chuck Ricci and his scouts find the players, and Director of Minor League Operations George Pappas takes it from there in developing all that talent.

Pappas has explained it in this way: “We take a lot of pride in the job we do. We push ourselves not to rest on our laurels, always challenging ourselves.”

“We are critical of the work we are trying to do. At the Minor League level, we want to develop and win simultaneously. We believe winning at the Minor League level is a byproduct of proper player development.”

It has been a formula for success at the Big League level, and don’t expect to see it change anytime soon.
