DALLAS, TX — Both Julian Alvarez and Alexis Mac Allister bore the same expression following Argentina’s 2-0 victory over Austria in Group J at Dallas Stadium: A light-hearted chuckle accompanied with a disbelieving shake of the head. Even those closest to Lionel Messi cannot comprehend what he does.
The Argentinian legend continued to smash FIFA World Cup™ records on Monday, setting the all-time record for goals in the global finals with 18 with his brace, while equalling Just Fontaine’s feat of a goal in six successive matches.
Mac Allister says he’s just happy to be along for the ride.
“There are no words to describe what he does,” said the midfielder. “Obviously, he’s small, but whenever you watch him, it’s a dream. And today, being able to experience it first-hand, I’m really enjoying it.
“The other day, I heard my dad say that it’s one thing to watch him from the stands, and another to watch him on TV. And I’d say it’s something else entirely to watch him out on the field, right there with the rest of them. The things he does are simply incredible. The way he reacts at the last moment to whatever’s happening. So, anyway, I’m just happy that he’s able to enjoy himself and score goals.”
That sentiment was echoed by Alvarez, who was left speechless by the otherworldly exploits of the No10.
“I don’t even know what to say. It’s impressive,” said Alvarez. “Honestly, there aren’t many more words to add. We see it every day, so many years showing off his magic, his talent. He’s the greatest of all time and we just try to enjoy him every time.”
It wasn’t easy sledding for Messi and Co. The Inter Miami man missed the mark on an early penalty, and the Albiceleste found Austria’s pressure difficult to break down. Still, it was job done and another step forward in their pursuit of back-to-back titles.
“This match was very difficult, and we need to keep going down this path, preparing ourselves, pushing hard like we’ve been doing, to keep moving forward step by step in this World Cup,” said Alvarez.
