BRONX, NY — The weather was perfect, the sun, the temperature, the breeze from the beach and the hundreds of people that stopped by to see some of the fun basketball games was all worth the price of admission, FREE.
Yes, FREE. Every year for the past 32 years, Latino Sports organizes this community event that provides “Friendship First, Competition Second” basketball games and most important free health screenings to every participant and any beachgoer, courtesy of BronxCare Medical.
The basketball games are.
Latino Sports Vs. BronxNet Cable TV – This yearly game is for a “Bragging Rights” Trophy. Whoever wins gets to keep the trophy for the year until they meet again at Orchard Beach. Unfortunately, we lost this year, and the trophy will be exhibited in the BronxNet offices until next year that Latino Sports players and coach, Joe Cruz. Jr. vowed to bring the trophy back to Latino Sports. We shall see!
The second game is always between senior basketball players of both the East Harlem League Harlem Legends and the Harlem Legends. Santos Negrón an East Harlem sports and community advocate for more than 50 years coordinates this game and is also the coaches the East Harlem Legends team. The Harlem Legends is coached by Lahh Woods.
The final game of the day was the Hoops In The Sun (HITS) championship game. HITS runs several basketball tournaments from 10-year-olds to 18 and over. The much-anticipated finals for the HITS summer league were played in front of a growing crowd of spectators and family members that came to see one of the most competitive and exciting games of the summer. Everyone enjoyed watching this sea saw game from the start to the last seconds. The game was decided by one point in the last 0.8 seconds.
Throughout the day people were entertained with the sounds of Deejay Blade and with free health screenings provided BronxCare Medical Center aver important component of the event as the Bronx is considered the unhealthiest county in New York State.
This 32md annual community event is loved and supported by many community individuals that recognize the importance of this annual event.
