Brief bits of before and after the Yankees game

BRONX, NY — Yesterday, I attended the Rockies-Yankees batting practice to meet a Boricua brother that was introduced to me by a good friend, Jossie Alvarado from Salinas, Puerto Rico. Jossie is a well-respected sportswriter who has written several books on Puerto Rican baseball and players. Jossie sent me a text and asked if I was going to the Yankee game to say hello to a friend, Dr. Jerry Armador, the Colorado team psychiatrist. There are not too many Puerto Ricans in many of the teams front offices, or positions outside of the foul poles so for me it was a pleasure to meet a fellow countryman and the psychiatrist to a major league team.

Dr. Jerry Armador and I met in the visiting teams dugout and though we never met before, we immediately recognized each other. I was easy to spot since I was wearing one of our company Latino Sports shirts. It was a sincere pleasure to meet Dr. Armador. We spoke a bit about baseball, Puerto Rico, our mutual friend Mr. Alvarado and gave him a brief overview of Latino Sports and the LatinoMVP award. He was very impressed with our work and agreed to stay connected.

While on the field I saw a group walking out, and one of them had a Yankee hat with a small Puerto Rican flag on the side. We Puerto Ricans like to recognize each other when we see one another especially in a city outside our own, especially in places we don’t see too many of us, like on the Yankee field during batting practice. It was a pleasure meeting them and giving them a Condado de La Salsa (Bronx) welcome.

Yesterday was a special Yankee fan giveaway day. It was Juan Soto figurine night. Soto is on fire and so popular with Yankee fans so any item given that has to do with him will easily bring additional fans to the stadium. After the game, on my way home I saw these two young ladies, Genesis and Jalisa holding the Juan Soto figure that they received for attending the game. I enjoyed speaking to them because they did not know too much about who Juan Soto was, but as Genesis explained, her brother had two tickets and could not come to the game. So, he asked his sister to go to the stadium to get the Juan Soto giveaway. They were excited to attend the game and do a solid for a brother who was very interested in getting the Juan Soto figurine. That’s a committed sister!
