NEW YORK, NY — After a turbulent 2024-2025 New York Jets season, recording five wins with a dozen losses, a new leader has entered One Jets Drive in Florham Park, New Jersey.
The Jets hired their former cornerback, Aaron Glenn, to be their latest head coach last Monday. Glenn was the defensive coordinator for one of the NFL’s best teams, the Detroit Lions, the last four years. He was on many teams’ head coaching candidates lists, so it is hard to question Jets CEO Woody Johnson for hiring him.

Former Jets head coach Rex Ryan, who is now a panelist on ESPN’s Sunday “NFL Countdown” show, made no secret of his desire to return to his old job. The Jets, who fired Ryan at the end of the 2014 season, did interview him last month, but it was more out of courtesy than interest.
What I found strange was the animus Rex Ryan faced from many in the media. That certainly had to have influenced Woody Johnson’s decision-making. Say what you will about Ryan’s coaching, but from a media standpoint, Rex was golden. His press conferences were entertaining, and he was not afraid to provide controversial quotes. That was a breath of fresh air in a world where coaches loathe to say anything noteworthy which can be used for bulletin board fodder by a rival organization.
Ryan loved to predict how his teams were going to kick the opposition’s butt. That was not always the case, but it was fun to hear. His boasts certainly drove up ratings for CBS when the Jets made back-to-back appearances in the AFC Championship Game in 2009 and 2010. As Jets fans are painfully aware, their team has not had a playoff game in the past fourteen years.

Tom Brady returns to Sunday’s Super Bowl, but this time as a Fox Sports broadcaster instead of a quarterback. While he showed improvement as an analyst working with play-by-play partner, and former SNY Mets field reporter, Kevin Burkhardt, he rarely provided the insights, which Burkhardt’s longtime partner, former NFL tight end, Greg Olsen did. That may be due to the fact Brady, who is also a minority owner in the Las Vegas Raiders, is not allowed to meet with other personnel from other NFL teams and is also prohibited from criticizing the officiating.
Super Bowl LIX in New Orleans: Eagles vs. Chiefs, the rematch from 2023
Sunday’s Super Bowl is a rematch from 2023 as the Philadelphia Eagles will be looking to get even with the Kansas City Chiefs. As much as I would like for that to happen, it is hard to go against Chiefs QB Patrick Mahomes. He and the Chiefs remind me of a Hulk Hogan WWE championship wrestling match in the late ‘80s and early ‘90s. For the entire bout, Hogan would get the stuffing knocked out of him by his opponent. As the match was less than a minute away from its scheduled ending, Hogan would inevitably find a way to pin his rival.

What should have started as a week of anticipation in Philadelphia for the Super Bowl was marred by last Friday’s medevac jet crashing on Cottman Avenue five minutes after takeoff from Northeast Philadelphia Airport.
Northeast Philadelphia is like Queens in many ways. The area is dominated by attached private homes, quiet residential streets, and busy shopping centers. Just as Queens is “the World’s Borough,” you can find every ethnic group represented in Northeast Philadelphia. It is miraculous the damage and casualties were not worse than they were.
2024-2025 Washington Wizards: 7-41 currently
You have to feel for Washington Wizards radio color commentator, Flushing native, and Bayside High School alum, Glenn Consor. The Wizards are so awful, they make the Brooklyn Nets look like the Red Auerbach era Boston Celtics in comparison.
On Friday night, the Wizards were being blown out at home by the Los Angeles Lakers. Consor, who has endured more than his fair share of these lopsided games, thanked his audience for not tuning out when with the Wizards down by 35 points in the third quarter.
Mets sign utility infielder Nick Madrigal
It appears the Jose Iglesias-OMG era in Flushing is coming to an end. The Mets signed free agent utility infielder Nick Madrigal who played the past four seasons for the Chicago Cubs. He is 27 and is a former first-round draft pick of the Chicago White Sox in 2018. His career has been marred by injuries. Madrigal is eight years younger than Iglesias and has minor league options remaining.

If you are looking for a sign that winter is halfway over, the Mets equipment truck left Flushing for the team’s spring training facility in Port St. Lucie, Florida this past Friday.
The End of Print at The Star-Ledger
The Star-Ledger was New Jersey’s largest newspaper for as long as anyone can remember. That is why I was saddened to learn they published their last print edition on February 2. The Star-Ledger was the home to sports writing greats like Jerry Izenberg, Moss Klein, and Dan Castellano.
Last Monday NBC kicked off their celebration for the 50th anniversary of “Saturday Night Live” with a “Ladies and Gentlemen…50 Years of SNL Music” It was a three-hour documentary saluting the myriad of musical artists who have performed on the stage of NBC’s Studio 8-H. Queens was well-represented by Paul Simon and RUN-DMC, but noticeable by their omission were Forest Hills’ punk rock legends, the Ramones. Questlove, the producer of this documentary, spent too much time on a forgotten punk band named Fear whose frontman, Lee Ving, was a buddy of SNL legend John Belushi.

Out on Hulu: “The Best Heart Attack of My Life”
Hulu’s newest limited series, “The Best Heart Attack of My Life,” is unusual in many ways. Normally, the leading man in any entertainment endeavor is quite handsome. That is not the case with “The Best Heart Attack of My Life,” which stars Alan Sabbagh as an overweight, bald, 45-year-old chain smoker whose wife has left him, and is working as an obscure ghostwriter for a Buenos Aires publishing house to pay the rent.
While that premise may not sound like fun, “The Best Heart Attack of My Life,” is surprisingly engaging because of its gritty realism, terrific writing, and excellent acting. It does not drag any of the plot out as it finishes in an economical six episodes. You can watch the show in Spanish or the dubbed English version.
