BRONX, NY — Once they played old fashioned doubleheaders, those were always a tradition a few times a year on Major League Baseball’s schedule. At Fenway Park up in Boston, Yankee Stadium, check the schedule and it was two games for one price.

And the day-night doubleheader, different from the traditional twinbill as we were accustomed to say. And separate admissions at the gate to assure owners and players receive their share of two separate admissions instead of one or back-to-back games.
The Yankees and Red Sox were supposed to play ball with a single admission for fans, rain disrupted the plan at Yankee Stadium in early June so it was cancelled and rescheduled for this Saturday, a day-night affair, in the Bronx. Separate admissions, as the night game belonged to FOX Sports.
A long day at the ballpark for those behind the scenes. Ballplayers, managers, coaching and support staff of the Yankees and Red Sox had a few hours to regroup in between fans exiting the stadium. At 5:30pm ET, the gates opened again and first pitch was thrown at 7:15pm ET.
Significant are these ballgames, the Yankees and Red Sox in a renewed rivalry and four games to decide who wins the season series. Important for the Yankees to avoid losing the series or Boston gets the tie breaker for a potential AL Wild Card series to be played with home advantage in five weeks.
“A lot of contributions up and down, good situational at-bats, ” said Yankees manager Aaron Boone after his team salvaged the night cap with a 9-2 win. The Yankees have an opportunity to win this important series with the Sunday afternoon finale.

More importantly, the night version of this doubleheader saw the Yankees bats come alive (13 hits, all singles), an offense that has been struggling out. Their five-run eighth inning was all on singles and from base stealing, setting up runs.
Though the day version was all Red Sox as Yankees starter Carlos Rodón (4-3, 3.20 ERA) recorded his third loss of the year. A Yankees base running mistake of Amed Rosario and throwing error at second while catcher Ali Sánchez was responsible for a run-scoring passed ball in the fifth.

Not to be forgotten here, Yankee Stadium was electric—over 91,578 combined for separate admissions, giving more meaning to the renewed rivalry. Significant revenue too after a day-night affair in the Bronx.
The Yankees though are concerned with rookie prospect George Lombard Jr. who was removed after the third inning in the night game win with right knee discomfort and Boone said the shortstop is day-to-day.

Sigh of relief regarding Lombard and also starter Max Fried, (3-⅔ innings, 63 pitches, 39 strikes) returning from the injured list with left elbow soreness—a boost again for the Yankees starting rotation as they begin the stretch run—still with a chance to overtake the AL East division leading Rays.
“It was nice to get back out there and get the competitive juices flowing,” Fried said, giving up a third inning Nick Sogard solo home run, three hits total and a walk with four strikeouts. “At the end of the day just us being able to win the game was really big. I’m happy we were able to do that.”
Impressive, though, were the 13 singles from the Yankees’ lineup that produced runs.

Regardless, Sunday’s finale will decide the season series after splitting 12-games. And crucial of a game on the schedule this season for both teams with the Yankees three games in front of the Red Sox for that top AL Wild Card spot.
“It’s very important,”said Luis García Jr. through an interpreter. “We’re battling, we have a clear objective so every victory is going to be important for us. We’re very excited about it.”
García recorded three hits, drove in the go-ahead run in the third inning and has eight RBI in his last seven games. Consistent García is as the entire lineup hopes to carry Saturday’s momentum to Sunday’s finale.

“It’s huge to pass the baton to the guy behind you knowing that we all together can do the damage like we did today,” said José Caballero, who took a part of the singles barrage (2-for-4) and a run scored.
He said that was a big example of the Yankees offense that overall has had difficulty scoring runs and getting hits at the right time. Perhaps the Yankees sense that urgency of how significant this series is. Then again, they did something different in the night game and it amounted to hard-hitting singles and getting to the Red Sox bullpen.
Yankees relievers including the consistent Paul Blackburn allowed only one run in 5.1 innings (1 ER, 3 hits, 1 walk, 6 Ks).

“You want to win that,” Red Sox interim manager Chad Tracy said about Sunday’s tiebreaker. “Come out and put your foot forward and try to push hard to win that game obviously.”
And the Yankees are not looking to face Aroldis Chapman in a save situation. The two-time LatinoMVP Reliever of the Year, with 30 saves, is rested and has not pitched since Monday.

Score early or tack on runs and the Yankees will avoid Chapman.
Significant is the finale, there is no doubt. Energy in the ballpark, of course. It’s Yankees-Red Sox aiming for October.
