NEWARK, NJ — The New Jersey Devils have experienced a season full of highs and lows, starting the season at 8-1 then going on losing streaks of six and five games. Now standing at 24-21-2 with 50 points total on the season, which is 13th in the NHL Eastern Conference standings, New Jersey’s general manager Tom Fitzgerald met the media recently to discuss the plight of the team.Â
âYou donât lower your standards even if you’re going through a rough time, the best teams face difficult times,â he claimed. âWe must reflect.âÂ
Fitzgerald emphasized the need for consistency and improvement, citing recent scouting meetings and game observations, later defending his decisions, including player contacts and lineup changes, and expressed confidence in the teamâs core of players.Â

He then acknowledged the teamâs impact from injuries, especially to Jack Hughes, Johnathan Kovacevic, and Jacob Markström, noting the importance of New Jerseyâs depth.Â
Fitzgerald also highlighted the need for continuous growth and development from other players and management.Â
âI know the fans are not happy, I keep myself accountable,â he said. âOur fans are passionate, we have plenty of time. I think we can be a good team when we are healthy. How do we get better? How do we apply that? We are finding ways to improve our team. I donât believe in the status quo, we can get back to the good team that started the season. This season is on me, I run the organization. We’re all working to find solutions.âÂ
Fitzgeraldâs essential overview: âThere are no excuses; we can make the playoffs.âÂ
Along with those in New Jerseyâs front office, Fitzgerald continues to work the phones daily to identify and pursue trade opportunities. The rumor mill has Dougie Hamilton and OndĆej PalĂĄt being shopped around.
