NEW YORK, NY — Despite Major League Baseball’s regular season kicking off in late-March with Opening Day, the end of May and Memorial Day weekend specifically are when many check in on the American and National League standings to see where each team is at.
Though for the New York Mets, with 22 games played on the year and 140 remaining, the 2026 season in Queens is on its way to being over before it even gets started.
By getting walked-off by the Cubs in extra-innings Sunday afternoon, 2-1, dropping their 11th consecutive game, the longest losing streak in franchise history since 2004, the Mets fell to 7-15 overall which is currently tied for the worst MLB record in 2026 with the Kansas City Royals.
“Eleven losses, that’s a lot—whether it’s in April or at any point in the season, but nobody’s going to feel sorry for us,” said Mets manager Carlos Mendoza following Sunday’s loss. “We’ve got to find a way. Off day tomorrow (Monday) then back at it again on Tuesday (vs. Minnesota).”
Across the 11-game losing streak—two vs. Diamondbacks, three vs. Athletics, three @ Dodgers and three @ Cubs—when the pitching got going, the bats were cold. And when those frigid bats started to show a spark, the pitching failed to produce. On top of that, there were consistent defensive and baserunning mishaps appearing on many occasions.
A losing recipe essentially, one that saw their opponents in this putrid 11-game stretch combine to score 62 runs while the Mets mustered up 19, rounding out a run differential of -42. Nineteen runs scored in an 11-game span as the team across town, the Yankees, scored 20 runs over the last 48 hours (13 on Saturday and 7 on Sunday vs. Kansas City).

“This feeling sucks. It’s not a good feeling,” Mets shortstop Francisco Lindor said. “We’re professionals and we got to find a way out of it. We got to do whatever it takes to end up on top after 27 outs, and sometimes 30 outs. It’s just not a good feeling. But nobody here is hanging their heads. Everybody’s got their heads up high, and they’re fighting for each other.”
When looking at their record further, the Mets—with their last win coming on Tuesday, April 7th—stand in last place in the NL East division by eight games and are six games back from the Pirates who hold the third and final NL Wild Card spot.

Their run differential is the second lowest mark in the NL behind the Phillies as both the Mets and Philadelphia sit in the bottom fifth in all of MLB in the category—Mets (-25), Blue Jays (-26), White Sox (-31), Royals (-32) and Phillies (-38).
“We’ve got to go out there and get it done and this past week-and-a-half, we haven’t gotten it done,” Lindor added. “It’s a bad feeling, but we got to turn the page. I’ve always said this, whether we win or lose, look at it for a little bit and then turn the page and focus on what we have in front of us.”
