Coral Gables, Florida (VIP-WIRE) – Como regalo de Año Nuevo, el comisionado, Rob Manfred, debería invitar a Pete Rose a regresar al beisbol.
Que el muchacho de aquella cabellera suspendida, mientras llegaba en slide de cabeza a tercera, pueda ser por primera vez, candidato a Cooperstown; que pudiera ser coach o mánager, que pudiera llegar de visita a los palcos de prensa de Major League Baseball (MLB) y sonreírle a todos los periodistas, contando sus valiosas anécdotas.
Pero no, temo que eso no ocurrirá, porque desde la injusticia de Bart Giamatti, todos los comisionados han aflojado la lucha contra las apuestas por todos lados, menos por el lado que sería más humano, es decir, el lado llamado Pete Rose.
Durante su mandato, el comisionado Bowie Kühn expulsó del beisbol, nada menos que a Willie Mays y a Mickey Mantle, porque aparecieron en un anuncio televisado en favor de un casino.
Y estaba prohibido el beisbol profesional en Nevada, por ser el Estado de las apuestas.
Pero a la larga perdonaron a Mays y a Mantle, se permitió beisbol triple A en Las Vegas; y ahora, se aprestan en esa ciudad de la vida sin noche, a construír el estadio más rimbombante, más lujoso de la historia, para llevarse a los Atléticos a jugar en medio del ruido de las ruletas y el vocerío de los alegres crupiers.

Además, hay docenas de direcciones de internet a través de las cuales se puede apostar en el beisbol todo el día.
¿Es malo o es bueno eso que han hecho con el deporte-espectáculo desde hace años?
Esa no es la pregunta que debe responderse ahora.
Lo es…: ¿por qué no el mismo trato de aceptación en el ambiente para con Pete Rose, el mejor espectáculo que pelotero alguno ha brindado al beisbol?
Entre tanto, Oakland se ha dispuesto a pelear por su equipo y evitarle una cuarta sede (antes Philadelphia y Kansas City). Por eso, van a construír un estadio frente a la bahía de San Francisco, tan espectacular, que tendrá dentro un hotel con 400 habitacions y estacionamiento para ocho mil 900 vehículos.
Comisionado Manfred…: Bríndele a Pete Rose, en vida, el premio que merece. Bríndenos a la gente del beisbol, su gente, la felicidad de ver el regreso a casa de nuestro héroe.
