NEWARK, NJ — History was made when Norchad Omier stepped onto the court for the Los Angeles Clippers earlier this week, becoming the first player from Nicaragua to ever appear in an NBA game. The milestone moment marked not only a personal achievement for Omier, but also a historic step forward for Nicaraguan basketball and Latinos from around the world.

Omier quickly added another milestone during the Clippers’ following game when he scored his first NBA points, a moment that symbolized years of hard work and determination. For the six-foot-seven forward, the basket represented more than just points on the scoreboard. It was the peak of a journey that began far from the bright lights of the league.

Before reaching the NBA, the Nicaraguan native, began playing basketball at the age of 13, gaining recognition at the Bluefields Basketball Academy.

He later moved to the United States, where he began developing his game at Miami Prep High School, averaging 26.7 points and 20.3 rebounds per game.

At the collegiate level, Omier gained national attention playing with the Arkansas State Red Wolves, where he quickly emerged as one of the most dominant rebounders in the country.

Omier continued his collegiate career with the Miami Hurricanes, showcasing his physical style of play and leadership. During his time with the Hurricanes, he became a key contributor, helping the program remain competitive in the highly regarded Atlantic Coast Conference (ACC).

After transferring to Baylor University for the 2024-2025 season, he averaged 15 points and 10 rebounds for the Bears.

“Basketball has changed my life, if I’m being honest,” he said in a previous interview. “Coming to Baylor was probably one of the best things I’ve ever done. I wouldn’t turn it down for anything.”

His relentless energy in the paint earned him multiple conference honors and established him as one of the most productive big men in college basketball—earning nods as the 2022 Sun Belt Conference Player of the Year and Defensive Player of the Year, among several other nods.

Omier entered the 2025 NBA Draft but went undrafted. Later, he joined the Cleveland Cavaliers during Summer League and continued developing with the Cleveland Charge and San Diego Clippers in the NBA G League—averaging 18  points, 11 rebounds and two assists.

His strong play later led to a two-way contract with the LA Clippers.

The breakout moment, one he worked countless hours for, came on March 5, 2026, when the forward scored his first NBA points against the Indiana Pacers. In just five minutes of action, he recorded two points, three rebounds, and one assist during a Clippers 130-107 victory.

Now in the NBA, Omier’s debut represents more than just another player entering the league, it represents inspiration for an entire nation.

As the first Nicaraguan to reach the NBA stage, Omier has opened the doors for future generations of athletes dreaming of following the same path.
