LOS ANGELES, CA — One of the bright spots for the Rays throughout this past weekend’s three-game series in LA against the Dodgers, has been the play of twenty-one-year-old third baseman Junior Caminero, Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic. He played solidly defending the hot corner at third and was a pain in the neck for the Dodger Starters and bullpen. He was two for four with his first MLB home run of the season with a double and one RBI in game one.

Three for five with two singles and the ninth-inning game-tying home run in Tampa’s stunning come-back win Saturday and finished up his three-day stay at Dodger Stadium with a double in four at bats. It’s no wonder why Tampa Bay sent off All-Star Isaac Paredes in a trade to Chicago earlier this summer, knowing the talent the organization had in Caminero.
Talking to the Rays’ Latin-American player development people in Tampa, I was told, “As part of a small deal with Cleveland at the 2021 reserve list filing deadline, Tobias Myers went to the Guardians, and the Rays got Caminero after one season in the Dominican Summer League season.”
“Our scout went in to look at another player and said hey, he’s good and all, but this Caminero kid IS WHO WE NEED TO GET.”

They went on to say, “Our mission is to keep defense and conditioning a priority so that he doesn’t have to eventually settle at 1B. He has the arm strength for the left side of the infield and experience at 2B/3B/SS. The bar to clear defensively for us is much higher than most.”
